Frequently asked questions
What merchants are asking about agent-commerce in 2026.
What is agent-commerce and why does my Shopify store need to be ready?
Agent-commerce is where AI shopping agents — powered by models like GPT-4o, Gemini, and Claude — browse, select, and purchase products on behalf of users. By 2026 a growing share of e-commerce traffic flows through AI agents rather than human browsers. Stores that publish the right signals (agents.md, UCP, GTIN, schema.org Offer, MCP) are transactable. Stores that don't publish these signals are invisible to agent-driven commerce. Run the scan above to see where your store stands.
What is agents.md and how does it help AI shopping agents?
agents.md is Shopify's canonical agent discovery file (at yourstore.com/agents.md). It tells AI shopping agents how to interact with your store: what actions are available, how to search products, how to add to cart, and what authentication is needed for checkout. Without it, agents have to guess your store's capabilities and often fail to complete transactions. Shopify introduced agents.md as part of their Agentic Storefronts initiative.
What is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?
The Google Universal Commerce Protocol is a machine-readable capability profile published at yourstore.com/.well-known/ucp. It signals to Google Shopping AI and compliant agents that your store supports agent-native transactions. A store with a valid UCP profile gets priority placement in agentic shopping results. Missing /.well-known/ucp means Google's commerce AI may skip your store.
Why do AI agents need GTINs on my products?
GTINs (Global Trade Item Numbers / barcodes / UPCs) let AI agents match your products against universal shopping databases and price-comparison indexes. When an agent is tasked with finding the best price on a specific item, it uses GTINs to cross-reference across stores. Without GTINs, your products can't be reliably matched and agents may skip you. Add barcodes to product variants in Shopify admin or via a product feed app.
What is an MCP endpoint and do I need one?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is the emerging standard for AI agents to interact with services in real-time via JSON-RPC. An MCP endpoint lets agents query your catalog, check inventory, and initiate purchases through a standardized interface — rather than scraping HTML. Shopify is rolling out native MCP support. Having an MCP endpoint is currently rare and a strong competitive signal.
How is this different from the AEO (AI Visibility) Checker?
The AEO Checker measures whether AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) can cite and recommend your store. The Agent-Commerce Checker measures whether AI shopping agents can actually transact — browse, select, and purchase. They're complementary: AEO gets you cited; agent-commerce makes you buyable. Run both for a complete picture.
Is the Agent-Shoppability Score real or estimated?
Real. We fetch your store's actual public endpoints: /agents.md, /llms.txt, /.well-known/ucp, /products.json, a real product page for schema.org markup, and /mcp. Every signal is scored from the actual HTTP response. The evidence section shows every URL fetched and its HTTP status code. Nothing is fabricated.
